You may have noticed the influx of coverage on vaping in the media over the last few weeks. Headlines are cropping up daily and casting a spotlight on the vape industry, covering everything such as vaping related illnesses, Juul’s (and other e-cigarettes’) popularity amongst youth, and brands using dangerous fillers in their products. Globally speaking, the vaporizer market has limited regulations in place and that has put the responsibility on companies to self-regulate, which many are doing a poor job of. For this reason, we feel it is important to provide our take on a few of these issues when it comes to the safety of vaping and how we fit into the broader picture.
Vitamin E Acetate & Other Dangerous Additives (PG, PEG, VG)
Last week the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) put out a consumer notice regarding six vaping related deaths and 450 possible cases of vaping related illnesses. The FDA is still in the process of research and testing, but they believe a likely common denominator amongst these reports are companies using an additive called Tocopheryl Acetate (More commonly known as Vitamin E Acetate).
Although Vitamin E Acetate is actually regularly and safely used in beauty products, it is dangerous as an additive, and FeelCBD has not and will never use Vitamin E Acetate in our formulations. We also do not use Propylene Glycol (PG), Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) or Vegetable Glycerin (VG), all which are other commonly used additives found in vaping products that we believe are dangerous. FeelCBD want to provide our consumers 100% transparency when using our products, which is why we have always included the ingredients in our products, on the product pages and packaging.
What is Fractionated Coconut Oil and why do we use it?
In addition to the CBD and essential oil blends in our products, we use one other ingredient: Fractionated Coconut Oil. We use this in our formulations as the Full Spectrum CBD oil we source is of such high purity (all the oils we use are over 90% CBD) and we receive it in a concentrated wax-like state. For a wax-like substance to be vaporized efficiently, it needs to be heated to a very high temperature where the oil would become carcinogenic. This is why we use Fractionated Coconut Oil to create a thinner oil formulation, that allows us to work with our manufacturer and create a custom device that heats the oil to a temperature lower than the majority of vaporizers in the market. Temperature is an important factor in the dangers of vaping, and we’ll cover this a bit further below in this post.
Misconception Dispelled – Fractionated Coconut Oil does NOT cause lipid pneumonia.
There is one common misconception about using Fractionated Coconut Oil, which is that it can cause lipoid pneumonia. Lipoid pneumonia is a rare condition that occurs when fat particles enter the lungs, causing inflammation.
Fractionated Coconut Oil, also known as Medium Chain Triglycerides is essentially coconut oil where all the long-chain triglycerides have been completely distilled out. As there are no long-chain triglycerides in fractionated coconut oil, our bodies actually treat fractionated coconut oil like a carbohydrate, not a lipid. This means our bodies do not require lipolysis, which is a process where bile salts and other digestive enzymes are required to help break them down for absorption.
Temperatures when vaping
We believe in being proactive with self-regulation in this industry and feel that greater awareness needs to be brought to vaping temperatures. We strongly believe this topic deserves more attention and is an under-discussed aspect of potential health issues regarding vaping.
One of the key advantages of vaporizing as a delivery method is the ability to absorb CBD at a higher rate than any other delivery method. The image that most people conjure in their heads about vaping are these large clouds of smoke blanketing the air around you, but in reality, the oil should not be heated to a level so high that you are blowing out massive clouds when you exhale. For the body to actually absorb the CBD efficiently, overheated oil is not a requirement and the resulting vapor can be dangerous to your respiratory system. We work with our manufacturers to ensure our oil is heated to as low a temperature as possible, without compromising the effectiveness of this delivery system for CBD. Low and slow is the way to go, and we hope this topic also receives more attention during this time of scrutiny.
Why do we offer CBD in this delivery method?
Lastly, we think it is really important to bring this back to why we offer vaporizing as a delivery method for our products. Other than direct intravenous administration, vaporizing provides the quickest onset for achieving the benefits of CBD, with a bioavailability close to double that of oral ingestion. With vaporizing, the CBD bypasses the liver and goes directly from the lungs into your bloodstream, making it one of the most efficient delivery methods for CBD. Again, we do take self-regulation seriously and have put as much care and thought into developing a safe vaping product. As research and regulation continue in this new environment, FeelCBD will continue to ensure that we not only meet but exceed any safety regulation put forth.
Other Delivery Methods
Delivery methods are not a one-size-fits-all and we understand that. That is why we continually expand our product line up and always look into other effective delivery methods. Our team here at FeelCBD is committed to making great products and taking every step we can to ensure the safety of the products we offer. Unlike many companies who hire white label services, our formulation and production all takes place in-house, and we take every step we can to ensure the products we release are of the highest quality. If there are ever questions or concerns, we are always readily available through email, live chat or our social media platforms for a conversation.
